While the timeline argues about which chatbot writes the best email, some of the most serious people in AI have moved on to a bigger question: can a machine understand the physical world? Not the next word in a sentence, but how a room is laid out, how a machine part behaves, how the universe actually works.
We built a new section of the site, AI Innovation, to profile the companies chasing it. We start optimistic, because these bets are genuinely thrilling, and we keep a friendly sceptic in the room, because a billion dollars of funding is not a working product. Here are the first four deep dives.
1. World Labs: Fei-Fei Li's $1.23bn bet on spatial intelligence. The researcher whose ImageNet dataset helped start the AI boom now wants machines to understand 3D space. Her first product builds whole persistent worlds from a single photo, and Nvidia and Autodesk are backing her.

2. Project Prometheus: Jeff Bezos and the $18bn "artificial general engineer". Bezos went back to co-CEO to build AI that invents and manufactures physical objects. It has raised around $18bn and shipped nothing yet. Thrilling ambition, uncomfortable ratio.

3. AMI Labs: Yann LeCun bet his reputation that LLMs are a dead end. A Turing Award winner left Meta, raised $1bn, and is building the world models he says language models can never become, and open-sourcing the plan. He may be early. He may be right.

4. Accelerated Understanding: the team that told Bezos no. Anima Anandkumar and her co-founder turned down a Bezos-backed offer and ditched the transformer entirely for neural operators that simulate physics. The boldest architectural bet on the list.

The common thread: after three years of bigger chatbots, the frontier is shifting from language to the physical world. Whether that becomes the next great platform or a beautiful set of research demos is the open question, and it is the most interesting one in AI right now.
